I’m playing possum.
The children’s game I played with my Earth father so many years ago where I pretend to be asleep. That’s what I’m doing right now.
The morning sun slipped between the soft folds of the silken curtains and fell across my face. I’ve tried to coax my eyes to an open position a number of times. But it’s not working. I rummage through my thoughts and jumbled feelings in search of my apprehension.
When I fell asleep last night, curled up tight in Chris’s arms, I hadn’t felt this gnawing, unsettling feeling in the pit of my stomach. But as I lay here my nerves have collected themselves into a knot in my intestine’s and a bead of sweat licked the side of my face. The warmth of Chris’s lips on my neck throttle the unease. His delicate mouth drew a line of pleasure from the base of my neck to the slant of my ear. “Wake-up sleeping beauty,” he said.
“I wouldn’t exactly call her sleeping beauty. I think I see a line of slobber on her pillow.”
My eyes popped open. I grabbed the blanket and drew it up and over my chest. Then I peered around Chris to glare at Ian. “Get out.”
“You’ve got nothing I haven’t seen before…up close and personal like.”
Chris leaped from the bed and stood in front of him in a blink. “What the hell do you want?” He said. His fists were balled at his side and his mouth was a straight line of agitation.
Ian threw his head back and laughed. “Whoa. Chill Slick. I couldn’t hear a thing from my girl all night and I wanted to check on her.” I narrowed my eyes at Ian and nearly leaped from the bed. Then I remembered the ridiculously inappropriate nightgown Chris brought for me to sleep in. I pushed myself back on the bed but pulled myself to a sitting position.
“First, I’m not your anything.” Both Chris and Ian spun around to stare at me. “Second, I don’t give a damn if this is your house. You invited us, and this is our room. So, you can’t enter unless we give you permission. Third, I’m fine so get the hell out.”
Ian smiled. “Somebody’s cranky. Woke up on the wrong side of the bed. And you seem to confuse me with someone who gives a damn what anyone thinks.”
“Ian this arrangement isn’t going to work if you just barge in my private space anytime you want.”
“The thing is, I was actually concerned… I couldn’t hear your thoughts all night. I just wondered if The General had come and snatched your ass back to Savoria. Guess not.” He turned and looked Chris up and down a few times. “Stay outta my way Slick.”
Then he vanished.
