Crewe’s expression when I look up from the letter alarms me. His face is crimson and his eyes are dark with fury. Apparently, he has broken the cipher. Crewe knows who the traitor is.
Without a word, Crewe stalks out of my bedroom and then out of the house. At the door, I call after him, but he’s already one house down the road. After thrusting my feet into my boots, I run to catch up. “Hey,” I say when I reach him, but his brisk stride is uncompromising and his deliberation unrelenting. “Crewe,” I plead, pulling at his sleeve.
After snapping it away, he throws, “Go home,” over his shoulder.
This time, I get in front of him and ask, “Who is it?” He tries to brush past me, so I latch my hands around the back of his hot neck and wrench his face toward mine. “You’re going to tell me what you know,” I demand through gritted teeth. “Right. Now.”
Crewe pries me off him, but he doesn’t let go of my wrists. When he looks at me, I’m chilled to the bone. Never in my life have I seen such a harrowing expression.
