LUCAS
Bleeding profusely, running as fast as his injured body could, his chances of staying alive grew slimmer with each painful step. It was nearing dawn and the Knights still gave chase; luckily, their serum would wear off with the approaching sun…unluckily, so too
would his strength.
He knew he couldn’t make it to the coven. He needed a hole in which to sleep, but the park and cemetery were also too far-off. He would have lain there a day before returning to Nate’s mansion. That was now impossible; tonight, he may actually die.
For the first time he felt human, an alien experience. In his 150 years, he had cheated death numerously, but circumstances this time were different—harsher, more difficult to overcome.
Even with his preternatural body convulsing in agony, he clung onto a tiny ray of hope. His prophetic dream, his Vision, had not yet occurred…he couldn’t die before it did.
He had never made a vampire, but when he did, his tyro would be the most powerful vampire since the First.
Unlike the majority of the Living Dead, no vampire had turned him. He was born one.
He was of Pure Blood—a Royal, a Prince, direct lineage of the First. He and his siblings were the Royal Family…but here he was, about to die at the hands of scum—to humans who used a serum to be like the very prey they hunted. Despite the pain, he growled in frustration that he couldn’t turn and face them, punish…torture them.
With every rasping breath hurting his chest, delivering bolts of stinging pain that weakened him further, he raced, leaping from rooftop to rooftop, faster than the human eye could register.
Six of his Royal Guards had died at the Knights’ hands following his meeting with Fernando. Caught nawares, it was a losing battle and he had sent back one of his guards to report of it to Nate. Despite his anguish, he grinned at the image of his brother seeking retribution; oh, how the Silver Legion would rue their assault.
He glanced back; he couldn’t spot them, but they couldn’t be far. Looking up, the sky was going pink—his desperation swelled.
Reaching a ledge, his eyes focused on the impending doom in the sky, he missed his footing and hurtled between the two buildings. He could do nothing as the ground rushed towards him—exhausted and weak, his strength all but gone.
