Also, something else I need to mention is there are a lot of characters. Thankfully there is a glossary or directory in the back which lists them and the colony they live in. This in itself was different, because they mainly grouped themselves according to their spiritual outlook and faith. With this many characters, the book does start off slowly as they are introduced over several chapters, giving a reader a chance to get to know them and their personalities, but it soon becomes apparent from the strange events that start to occur that something about this gathering is not like the ones before.
Even though there are so many characters, there were several which caught my attention immediately. The first one is Queen Alia of Lia Fail. She became one of my favorite characters, and it was interesting to watch her character progression from the beginning of the book to the end. Another character from Lia Fail that I like is her captain of her guard, Sean Lantry. I also liked Tanner, one of her teen-aged sons. I also liked Beverly, one of the healers within the colony as well.
Overall, this was a book that took me a little while to get to the flow of the story, but once I was there, I just sat back and enjoyed the rest of the book, cheering on the heroes. I'll recommend this book to readers who like adventure and elements of any of the different genres mentioned before. My rating is 4/5 platypires.
