Synopsis: It’s 1950, and as the French Quarter of New Orleans simmers with secrets, seventeen-year-old Josie Moraine is silently stirring a pot of her own. Known among locals as the daughter of a brothel prostitute, Josie wants more out of life than the Big Easy has to offer.
She devises a plan to get out, but a mysterious death in the Quarter leaves Josie tangled in an investigation that will challenge her allegiance to her mother, her conscience, and Willie Woodley, the brusque madam on Conti Street. Josie is caught between the dream of an elite college and a clandestine underworld. New Orleans lures her in her quest for truth, dangling temptation at every turn, and escalating to the ultimate test.
With characters as captivating as those in her internationally bestselling novel Between Shades of Gray, Ruta Sepetys skillfully creates a rich story of secrets, lies, and the haunting reminder that decisions can shape our destiny.
My Review
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
4 Platypires for Out of the Easy by Ruta Sepetys
I really enjoyed this book and thought it was an interesting read. I thought the scene building was fabulous and I could get a real sense of 1950s New Orleans. It was so well done that the city actually felt like another character than just a place. Josie the 17 year old MC was a character that was very fresh, smart and one that you couldn't help but want to see succeed. I thought the way she was written was very well developed. Having to grow up as an daughter of a prostitute, a madam as a godmother of sorts and living inside a bookstore already made her a very interesting character.
Out of the Easy is well written historical fiction book that I am happy that my book club decided to read. I would recommend this book for those wanting to read a book that they can get sucked into.
