Sound of Sirens by Jen Minkman
My rating: 3 of 5 stars I received this copy from Netgalley for an honest review. By no means would I ever consider myself a grammar nazi. I make mistakes all the time, and I never really comment about mistakes I find when I read a book. This time around I do have to point out the constant dashes. I don't think I ever read a book where there was dash on almost every page. Instead of making two separate sentences or just adding an "and" there was a dash. Maybe it just me but it was really distracting. Other than that the story was good. The story is dystopian mermaid book about a girl named Enna who lives on the island Skylge. The story is set in a parallel universe where there are the "haves" called the "Currents" who have electricity and the "have nots" called the "Skylgers" who do not have electricity. The "Currents" are the ruling class in this world and they do not mix with the "Skylgers." This of course sets up the perfect star-crossed romance between a "Current" Royce and Enna a "Skylge" which I thought was pretty good. They both come together for their love of music. Overall I did enjoy the story but I do feel I have more questions about the world that was built. I really wanted to know more about the mermaids. The book just really just hinted about them and they were not a real focal point. I hope in sequel they make more of an appearance. A story about mermaids needs mermaids. This year I started by diversity grade rating system which you can find more details here. Sadly, I give this a book a F. I do have to make a note that the people lived on island so maybe there wouldn't be a lot of diverse group of people to write about. View all my reviews |
I have made no secret that I wish I were a mermaid. Get to swim all day, never have to worry about clothes or bills. Get to sing when I want and then I get to prey on unsuspecting humans. OH YEAH! Now that's the life. *sigh but I was born with feet and not fins. At least once a day I am sad about it. No joke. In order to combat this sadness I will read books about mermaids. I have a soft spot for any mermaid tale so when I saw Sound Of Sirens by Jen Minkman up for review, I instantly signed up. Below is my 3 platypire review.

This was a very cute adorable read. We've all seen those movies where the romantic leads pretending to be dating but are in fact falling for each other. Well as a chick-flick fan this book hit the right spot. Yeah the story-line was a t...

I don't know whether to give this book 4 or 5 stars. It was pretty damn good. My only complaint is that I got kinda lost in all of the space jargon. Seriously, I felt kinda dumb because everything sounded so smart that I'm just gonna as...
