2 girls + 3 guys + 1 house – parents = 10 things April and her friends did that they (definitely, maybe, probably) shouldn't have.
If given the opportunity, what sixteen-year-old wouldn't jump at the chance to move in with a friend and live parent-free? Although maybe "opportunity" isn't the right word, since April had to tell her dad a tiny little untruth to make it happen (see #1: "Lied to Our Parents"). But she and her housemate Vi are totally responsible and able to take care of themselves. How they ended up "Skipping School" (#3), "Throwing a Crazy Party" (#8), "Buying a Hot Tub" (#4), and, um, "Harboring a Fugitive" (#7) at all is kind of a mystery to them.
In this hilarious and bittersweet tale, Sarah Mlynowski mines the heart and mind of a girl on her own for the first time. To get through the year, April will have to juggle a love triangle, learn to do her own laundry, and accept that her carefully constructed world just might be falling apart . . . one thing-she-shouldn't-have-done at a time.
My Review:
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
2 1/2 Platypires for Ten Things We Did (and Probably Shouldn't Have) by Sarah Mlynowski.
I am truly up in the air as to how I feel at about this book. On one side I did find it entertaining and I did like some of the characters. On the other hand I just couldn't get over with how unbelievable the story came to be. April & Vi were two unsupervised teenagers with money and house all to themselves. I understood how they could trick Vi's dad but I just didn't expect for it to continue throughout the whole book nor did I expect for Vi's mother never to make a visit.
The characters also never faced any real consequences for any of their misdeeds so this might not be the best book to deliver an inspiring message. But it did deliver a clear message about safe sex. I thought that was informative for teens but this isn't the best book that I have read in dealing with teen sex. I've read better.
The story wasn't bad but it was just a tad too over the top for me. The teens had funny dialogue that I liked but it just wasn't enough. I also felt that April was really annoying at times and not really likable. She came across as a spoiled rich girl who always got her way.
I just can't really recommend this book.
