Shy took the summer job to make some money. In a few months on a luxury cruise liner, he'll rake in the tips and be able to help his mom and sister out with the bills. And how bad can it be? Bikinis, free food, maybe even a girl or two—every cruise has different passengers, after all.
But everything changes when the Big One hits. Shy's only weeks out at sea when an earthquake more massive than ever before recorded hits California, and his life is forever changed.
The earthquake is only the first disaster. Suddenly it's a fight to survive for those left living.
My Review:
The Living by Matt de la Pena
My rating: 4 of 5 stars The Living was so refreshing to read. Its without a doubt great to read a book that reads just the way you and your friends talk. I grew up more "urban" aka "hood" and it was nice to read slang words and word usage the way I speak. Before I am misunderstood this book isn't written in ghetto speak- it just uses some of the urban slang. There is noway anyone will be left out or not understand what is going on. Its written in perfect English. Now all that being said, I really did like "The Living" and was really encaptured with the story. I wanted to know what else was going to happen. It was definitely a page turner. This is more than just a survivalist story which honesty is what I was expecting due to the synopsis. Its actually a mix of action-adventure, mystery and apocalyptic YA novel. My only complaint is that it took a while before the big earthquake to hit but once it did there was no turning back. I was hooked. I can't wait to read the sequel. View all my reviews |
