Over a hundred years after the death of Magnus Blackwell, Altmover Manor sits abandoned.
Lexie Arden and her fiancé, Will Bennet, are determined to rescue the neglected Mount Desert Island landmark. They want to make Altmover Manor their home. But Magnus has other plans.
A spirit bound to his former residence, Magnus finds himself inexplicably drawn to the young woman. She has a supernatural gift; a gift Magnus wants to exploit.
As Lexie and Will settle in, secrets from Magnus’s past begin to surface. Compelled to learn all she can about the former owner, Lexie becomes immersed in a world of voodoo, curses, and the whereabouts of a mysterious dragon cane.
Magnus’s crimes won’t be so easily forgotten, and what Lexie unearths is going to change the future … for everyone.
Lexie turned to Remi. “Something happened last night. I saw another ghost. A man. He called me Frances.” “Frances?” Remi took another bite of toast. “Who’s Frances?” “Who was Frances, you mean. If I tell Will about the ghost in the bathroom, he’ll freak out.” He dropped his half-eaten toast onto the plate. “Will is the sort who likes to live in the daylight. A world of shadows and ghosts is too much for him.” He pointed at her. “You and I, on the other hand, are tied to the shadow world. There, we are most comfortable.” “Well, I wasn’t too comfortable last night. This house is creeping me out. With ghosts and dragons everywhere, and then the disappearing cat.” Remi frowned. “What cat?” “I keep seeing a big gray cat around here.” She shrugged. “It’s friendly, but I have no idea where it lives.” “It’s an old house with lots of mice. The cat has probably hunted here for years.” Remi wiped his hands together. “As far as the ghosts go … you need to keep in mind there are two types of haunting occurring in this house: the imprints from the past, and the spirits of actual ghosts.” “I have no idea what you’re talking about.” Remi rested his hip against the counter. “Every event creates an impression. Murder, suicide, and unexpected death are intense experiences which can leave profound impressions on a place. Some things you may be experiencing are replays of the past. They’re repeating impressions, like the scream you heard.” “Yeah, but unless Magnus Blackwell died on his painting, what I witnessed in the living room doesn’t go along with your theory.” “No, Magnus Blackwell is haunting this house. He’s here, and he’s restless.” “Yeah, he wants his dragon cane. But what does the other guy want?” “Who knows? But you have an attic filled with answers waiting to be found. The cane might be up there, too.” Lexie picked up her coffee mug. “Why can’t Magnus Blackwell just tell me ‘go to this spot and find my cane’?” “Ghosts are no different from people, Lexie. They need help like we do, and because their bodies are gone, they need help from someone connected to this world. If there are two men haunting this house, they’re reaching out to you. You have to figure out how to help them.” “But why me?” “Because you’re here and you can see them.” He raised his head to the ceiling. “I better get up there. He’s wondering where I am.” “How can you tell?” He tipped his head to the side. “To hear, one only has to listen. Remember that. It works on ghosts and people.”
