Chapter 1
Walking up the tree covered path, Tristan kept thinking about the saying ‘you can’t see the forest for the trees’. Looking around the area surrounding the path she was walking on, Tristan could attest to that fact and knew that the quote was no lie.
As another branch swung back to hit her in the face, Tristan Caldwell lifted the stick she’d found on the floor of the woods they walked through. She was using it as a makeshift walking stick. Right now, though, she wanted nothing more than to clobber the man walking who was walking in front of her with the stick.
Parker Masterson had insisted on taking the lead as the two of them traipsed through Fallgrove National Forest. The woods sat just outside the town of Paxton, where they both lived.
Tristan hadn’t minded when they had started out, but now, every time Parker pushed a branch out of his way, the damn thing would flip back and hit her.
For the hundredth time since they had begun this trek, Tristan reached up to pull another leaf out of her shoulder length red hair. She yelled ahead to Parker, in front of her. “Damn it Parker, would you quit doing that?”
The slender, thirty two year old in front of Tristan turned around, his brown eyes frowning. “Will I quit doing what?”
The emerald eyes glared at her friend and so called partner. “Quit slapping me with branches. Every one you push out of your way, ends up in my face.”
Shaking his head of auburn hair, Parker tried not to laugh. “Sorry, I didn’t even think about it.”
Tristan wasn’t buying the lame apology. “If you’re sorry, then why are you standing there laughing?”
The smile turned into what almost looked like a pout on the almost too handsome face. A lot of people misjudged Parker as arrogant just by those looks. “I’m not laughing Tristan. Hey, I’ll try and be more careful, Okay? Besides, we’re almost there anyway.”
Tristan frowned. “Almost where? You still haven’t told me where you’re taking me. We must have hiked in five miles from the visitor center by now.”
When they had first gotten to Fallgrove National Park and made it to the visitor’s center, Tristan had been surprised when Parker had told her they needed to hike in. She never figured it would be this long of a hike and was glad for the tennis shoes she wore with her jeans and t-shirt, Although the hike was unexpected, at least she was dressed for it.
Parker nodded. “Pretty close to that. We really are almost there though and just ahead of us we get out of these thick trees.”
Nodding, Tristan then shrugged. “I’ll be glad to be out of this mess, but that still gives me no clue to where we’re headed.”
With a grin on his face, now Parker was the one to shrug, his small backpack moving slightly with the gesture. “It’s just a special place my brother and I used to come to before he…, I mean, before his, uh, accident.”
