If you missed any of the posts, go back and check them out now! Then go on and enter the giveaway, if you haven't already. Books & Chocolates - Review There's murders, controversy and destruction going on in this mind blowing read. Derring will captivate you with each page you turn. "You also wont believe who the real killer is." Angels With Attitude Book Reviews - Excerpt “Not much to go on.” Drew stood and picked up the two halves of the bookend, a bust of Shakespeare only recently separated at the neck. “You did say this had been checked for fingerprints?” “I did not say. But yes, it has. There aren’t any.” Chief Inspector Birdsong pursed his lips under his shaggy mustache. “Weren’t any.” Pieces of Whimsy - Author Interview What do you hope readers take with them when they read your books? My books vary widely from series to series, but I would say throughout them all is the theme of forgiveness and reconciliation, that God is a merciful, loving God who never leaves us and who walks with us through every trial and that it is never, never too late to turn to Him. Even though my Drew Farthering books tend to be lighter, fun reads, there is still that element in them. JoJo's Corner - Review "Julianna Deering has done it again!!! Spectacular!!! I love love love this series and I hope it never ends!!! Drew is absolutely one of my fave all time amateur sleuths- right up there with Hercule Poirot (not an amateur, I know) and Miss Marple. Who wouldn’t fall for a man who smelled of fresh linen, new books, tea and honey?!?" Kelly P's Blog - Excerpt “I just managed to slip out the back way.” Nick jumped into the car and wiped his sweating face with his handkerchief. “Madeline. She said I had to warn you.” “What’s happened? Is she all right?” Crafty Booksheeps - Top Ten Mystery Novels In choosing my top ten favorite mystery novels, I couldn't possibly go farther than my trio of favorite authors from the Golden Age of Mystery: Agatha Christie, Margery Allingham and Dorothy L. Sayers. Continue reading to found out what her top picks were... Death by the Book by Julianna Deering Christian Mystery Paperback, 320 pages March 4th 2014 by Bethany House Publishers Drew Farthering wanted nothing more than to end the summer of 1932 with the announcement of his engagement. Instead, he finds himself caught up in another mysterious case when the family solicitor is found murdered, an antique hatpin with a cryptic message, Advice to Jack, piercing his chest. Evidence of secret meetings and a young girl's tearful confession point to the victim's double life, but what does the solicitor's murder have to do with the murder of a physician on the local golf course? Nothing, it would seem--except for another puzzling note, affixed with a similar-looking bloodied hatpin. Soon the police make an arrest in connection with the murders, but Drew isn't at all certain they have the right suspect in custody. And why does his investigation seem to be drawing him closer and closer to home? The Written Adventure - Excerpt The chief inspector managed a grim smile. “Ah, Detective Farthering. Good of you to come.” “Not at all, Inspector. What’s happened?” “Act Two, it would seem, of our little drama in Winchester last week. I thought perhaps another pair of eyes that saw the aftermath of the Montford murder might help us here.” Birdsong shrugged a little self-consciously. “Saw your car turn into the drive.” Letters from Annie Douglass Lima - Interview About the Cover About how much time does it take to design a cover like this? ...Rules of Murder roughly took 50 hours, give or take, for art direction and design—composition, layout , typography. That included research, team discussions, Illustrator reviews, art direction, thumbnail sketches, type development, character development, image and inspiration research, and revisions/finessing to nail down an approved, final look... Mel's Shelves - Review "I loved this book! As soon as I started reading it, I knew it would be hard to put down. I enjoyed everything about it: the time period--1930's, the location--London (Farthering St. John), a compelling mystery (hatpin murderer), an obstinate aunt, humor, polite society and a light, clean romance." Deal Sharing Aunt - Series Inspiration I am often asked why I started writing my Drew Farthering mysteries. It all came about because I love to read Agatha Christie and Margery Allingham and Dorothy L. Sayers, the queens of the golden age of crime fiction, the 1920s and '30s. Their famous detectives (Poirot, Campion and Wimsey, respectively) are a delight to read. And the BBC has filmed versions of many of their novels which are always a sumptuous treat. After enjoying the genre for so long, I simply had to try my hand at writing it. The Wonderings of One Person - Drew Description There was a little spark of mischief in his gray eyes that she had already come to know so well. Surely even Aunt Ruth couldn’t dislike him for long. In the weeks Madeline had been here in Hampshire, she had seen him with the older ladies in the village– well, with all the women to be honest. He didn’t intentionally flirt, not really, but he was never lacking in charm, charm that was all the more attractive for its artlessness, charm that made them girlish and indulgent whenever he was around. Cherry Mischievous - Excerpt “Hello there.” They both turned at the decidedly American voice, and Madeline’s face was all-over smiles. “Well, hello to you. What are you doing here? Oh, let me introduce you to Drew Farthering. Drew, this is Freddie Bell. I met him yesterday when I was out.” My Devotional Thoughts - Spotlight Beck Valley Books - Excerpt Madeline turned from the shelf where Mrs. Harkness kept books on lace making and other traditional crafts. “And just why couldn’t she have done it?” She put her hands on her hips and looked up into Drew’s face, a challenge in her periwinkle-blue eyes and a defiant set to her mouth that made it not a whit less captivating than usual. “You never think women are capable of real crime.” LDS and Lovin' it - Review I also found Drew an engaging, sympathetic character who sincerely cared about those he was trying to help. The romance between him and Madeline was sweet and the interfering Aunt Ruth provided a humorous touch. With plenty of unexpected events and suspicious characters, Death by the Book, provides an entertaining and enjoyable read. My Love for Reading Keeps Growing - Mikado (book 3) Teaser Even though Death by the Book, the second in my series of Drew Farthering Mysteries, is hot off the press right now, I am thrilled to tell you a little bit about Book Three, Murder at the Mikado. After everything that happened during the past summer, Drew is happy to have some peace in his life. His company, Farlinford Processing, is doing nicely under competent, trustworthy management, and his relationship with Madeline Parker is better than ever. Everything is going well until an old flame, Fleur Hargreaves, suddenly makes an appearance at Farthering Place begging for Drew to prove her innocence in a murder case. Tell Tale Book Reviews - Excerpt Roger’s voice was scarcely a whisper, and so broken that Drew knew he wouldn’t have recognized it if he hadn’t known who it was. “Drew. Oh . . .” Drew heard a wrenching sob, then silence once more. “Roger? I say, Roger!” “You’ve got to help me. I just . . . I don’t . . . Sweet mercy, she’s dead. She’s dead.” The Pensive Chronicler - Review "Julianna Derring did a remarkable job of weaving a wondrous murder mystery set in England around the late 1920's. It kept me reading into the wee small hours of morning to find out if my suspicions of who the killer could be were right or not." SYNOPSIS:Zeke Reed lives his life by his rules, the biggest one being that he refuses to settle down. Through the years, it has become a running joke amongst his circle of friends that his condo would be well served by the installation of a revolving door. That’s what makes his friendship with Mary and Jeff work. All three of them are looking for some no-strings-attached fun. Until fate steps in, making them all take a look at what’s been developing while they’ve been busy fooling around. Unfortunately, every decision in life has consequences. When you choose to openly share your life with more than one person, things get complicated. Will Zeke, Jeff and Mary be able to stand together as the world tries to pull them apart? LINKS:MEL's REVIEW:Unexpected Consequences by Sloan Johnson *I was gifted a copy in exchange for a honest review. Unexpected Consequences is book number 3 in the Isthmus Alliance Series. I have not read the first two but Ms. Johnson did a great job in introducing me to her group of characters and sharing some of their history. I loved this book. I was surprised how much I enjoyed the storyline. Even though it was a m/f/m relationship, each individual person, Zeke, Jeff and Mary, are such strong stand alone characters that reading about all three in a triad relationship is heart stopping. The writing is excellent. The characters are people you come across in everyday life and have strong relationships with each other. I loved Zeke. His relationship with his family was amazing and brave. The dialect flowed and did not sound made up. I want to know more about these people. I have to go back and see how it all started since I know how it all ends. This is a great read. I did see a couple of things that needed a little work. At times a “he” was where a “she” should be and I would have to reread what I had read. Also there are a few places in the book that repeat the same history of the characters that was already stated in a previous chapter. SO, because of that…… Unexpected Consequences by Sloan Johnson receives 4 out of 5 PLATYPIRES!!! Texas Hugs and Happy Reading!! ABOUT the AUTHOR:Sloan Johnson is a big city girl trapped in a country girl’s body. While she longs for the hustle and bustle of New York City or Las Vegas, she hasn’t yet figured out how to sit on the deck with her morning coffee, watching the deer and wild turkeys in the fields while surrounded by concrete and glass. When she was three, her parents received their first call from the principal asking them to pick her up from school. Apparently, if you aren’t enrolled, you can’t attend classes, even in Kindergarten. The next week, she was in preschool and started plotting her first story soon after. Later in life, her parents needed to do something to help their socially awkward, uncoordinated child come out of her shell and figured there was no better place than a bar on Wednesday nights. It’s a good thing they did because this is where she found her love of reading and writing. Who needs socialization when you can sit alone in your bedroom with a good book? Now, Sloan is a tattooed, purple haired mom of two kids, one of which was a thank you present to her husband for letting her get a Staffordshire Terrier with more anxiety issues than Sloan has, which is saying something. She’s been kicked out of the PTA in two school districts and is no longer asked to help with fundraisers because she’s been known to lose herself in a good book and forget that she has somewhere to be. Giveaway</ i> Presented By EXCERPT</ span> The dark creature walked over to me, unusually close, the heat from his skin leaping onto mine. He held up his open palm. Suddenly the darkness of his eyes was illuminated with swirls of hypnotic colors circling each other in the very middle where his pupils should be. I knew I shouldn't</ span> be here, shouldn't be touching this sinful creature, but I couldn't stop. His touch was hot with a passion I had never known before, yet so familiar. I was caught in a trap that I never wanted to get out of.</ div> His other hand dug into my hair and jerked my head back, his breath hot on my neck, his eyes peering into mine. âHow many more, maâam?â a fireman shouted out above the sirens. The female just stood there in front of the smoldering shelter before her, both hands covering her face, ashen-filled tears falling from the edge of her jaw. âMaâam!â the fireman hollered out. âWho else are you missing?â The wind changed directions. I looked up to see another angel passing by, carrying the breeze along with her. She raised her hand ever so slightly to wave. I nodded at her. The fireman covered his nostrils with the inside of his arm as the wind carried the sultry smoke toward him. The female seemed unaffected by the smoke. She just kept staring at that front door, her apprehension more of a focus now as she waited. âTwo,â she finally replied. âDid she say two?â another guy asked. âTwo?â he asked her again to confirm. Never looking his way, she nodded. âMy husband, he went back in for our oldest son.â</ div> âWho are you?â I whispered, my chest heaving up and down from his firm grasp on my hair. My anger flared. I should kill him for putting his hands on me like that, but it felt so good. He narrowed his eyes at me for a moment before answering, âDraco.â Draco. He released me as I stood up straight, facing him. I knew who this strange creature was. I had heard about him on my travels. He was a solider of the dark, with strength witnesses marveled at. Most of the soldiers of the dark were cowards who slithered here and there with little, if any, common sense about their purpose or duty at hand. It was said that this Dracoâs loyalty surpassed all others. But there was one other tidbit I had heard that was even more unusual. Those who worked with him, who were on the same side, seemed to like him. It was a concept unheard of for the dark side. Everyone was your enemy and everyone hated each other. âAnd you are?â he asked. If I said my name, heâd know who I was as well, and heâd run away. My intrigue was far too deep to have him disappear just yet. âIt doesn't matter, does it?â I said.</ div> He smirked, a dimple forming in the side of his cheek. Excerpt:We walked to the front door, the guard tried to refuse, but that wasn’t going to stop me. I caught myself rolling my eyes; a mere mortal to guard against me and a wolf. At first, I was just going to toss him with magic, instead I grabbed him by his arms and drug him to me, sinking my fangs in deep, in a matter of seconds I had drained him, killed him. It was my first kill that way. I didn’t care, he was helping hurt my family. Cortne didn’t say a word. If she only knew how much more blood I wanted. I felt like I was starving. It had to wait though, I had to get my family. We took the stairs but disabled the elevators before leaving the lobby. We quickly and easily cleared floor two, where I drank from two more, until Cortne stopped me. This repeated through floor twelve. We’d clear it and I’d drink two people to near death before Cortne would stop me. On eleven she finally asked, “Damn, haven’t you had enough yet?” “No,” I answered as we stepped into the stairwell and headed up to twelve. I opened the door and froze. I smelled blood. Blood I recognized, three actually, Clayton, Caleb and Josh. It took a conscious effort not to just level the place. I knew if I did, I may very well kill them. Instead, I reached for Josh. “Josh?” Author Bio:I was born in Houston, Texas in 1977, to an interesting family. My mother and father separated when I was young. I lived with my mother who later remarried a wonderful man, who had a huge impact on me as I grew up. I have always had a love of reading, mostly paranormal. As a child, I would sneak up at late night, when my mom thought I was sleeping, to read. We moved around a lot, eventually settling in Deep East Texas. I married at a young age and eventually divorced. I have raised my now 16 year old son alone. I work full time as a pre-hospital nurse and sometimes see things that would make the rest of you have nightmares. On other days, I'm blessed to see miracles. These things are what drive me to write. I describes my job as- “I fight to save people’s lives. Sometimes I lose, sometimes I win. It's the emotional roller coaster of that job, which leads me to writing. I'm able to put those emotions into my characters and let them out of my heart and soul.” In 2006, I was diagnosed with a rare disease, shortly after that I was told I would be on full disability in five years and most likely to be dead in ten. I've fought to live a normal life every day since and I'm beating those odds. I work at a demanding job, I'm a single mom, care for an elderly mother, and two hyperactive dogs. On April 17, 2013 I faced another challenge in my life when my home was destroyed in the explosion in West, TX. I lost many friends and almost everything I own. Once again I have fought to get through it and I'm finally starting to feel normal again. Dacey's Harper is a 22 year old college student who lives in a very small town where everyone knows her name, to everyone in town she is known as the niece of the town crazy and is next in line to jump on the crazy train. Dacey however, is doing her best to keep it all together; including an unsympathetic father, a stepmother who has raised her as her own, a larger than life stepsister who at times she doesn't even know what to do with and not to mention her Adonis God of a boyfriend. Top that off with her spicy Latin best friend and, letâs not forget her crazy aunt who has the worldâs best one-liners, Dacey has her hands full but all that changes with one phone call and Dacey is left questioning Everything. Sara's Review Falling into the category of contemporary new adult fiction, Everything was a book I liked overall. It's set in Florida, in a little town called Shaddy Grove, between Miami and Orlando. For me, the thing that really made the book enjoyable were the characters. While the book does not end on a cliffhanger, there are enough subplots in the story that were left unresolved, and I'm curious enough about those to want to read the second book. 22 year old Dacey was one of the two main characters, and I took an instant liking to her, but what had me smiling at various points throughout the book were her interactions with her 18 year old step-sister called Aria. They were such a great pair of characters to read about, and I grew to care about what happened to them, and at one point I was close to tears. They were funny, but when they needed each other, they were there for one another. I also thought the secondary characters, especially Aunt Opal and Mr. Eugene, along with Dacey's best friend Justina and her mother Mrs. D were fleshed out well, along with Officer Justin Parks. While I enjoyed the book, one of the things that took me out of the story on various occasions were the typos and grammatical errors that I noticed as I was reading the book. Aside from that, I thought the storyline was good, and the characters felt real as well. I'll give Everything a rating of 4/5 platypires. EXCERPT: He was always on his super extra-best gentlemanly behavior when at my parents'. âWell, however long itâs been, itâs been too long,â said mom as she came in from the kitchen. âHow are you, Trevor?â âIâm good, Mrs. Harper,â he said, giving her a hug. âPlease, I have told you since you started dating my daughter to call me Ann. You may even call me Mom one day, who knows?â She gave him a wink. âMom,â Aria wailed. âWhy would you jinx them like that? Oh my gosh, you're so ⦠â she said as she put her head in her hands and shook it back and forth. âYour mom is so embarrassing,â she mouthed to me. âShe was your mom first,â I mouthed back. âOnly by four years,â I said, holding up four fingers. âWhat are you girls talking about now?â mom asked. âNothing,â we both said at the same time. âI hate when you do that!â she said. âSorry,â we said at the same time, again. âI give up,â she sighed and went in the kitchen to put dinner on the plates. That left us to go sit in the family room with Wally, who had been ignoring us so far by reading his paper, but when we sat down next to him, Trevor, bless his heart; actually spoke first. âGood evening, sir,â he said, extending his hand. âUuh,â my dad grunted, not bothering to look up from his paper. âHey, Dad,â I said. âYouâre late.â And youâre a dick, I thought to myself as I watched Trevor drop his hand limply to his side. âBy like three minutes, and mom said around seven not at seven, so ⦠â I trailed off. âAll I know is I am hungry and we had to wait for you, and you stroll in here being ungrateful for a meal thatâs free,â he grunted out. âDad, I didnât mean ⦠â I stared. âDaddy,â Aria cut in, âyou didnât ask how my classes went today, grouchy pants.â âThanks,â I mouthed, shooting her a grateful look. She shrugged it off. She was used to defusing our father-daughter âconversations,â especially when he was grouchy. âIâm sorry, baby girl, how was your day? Do you like all your classes?â he asked her sweetly. He did a complete Jekyll and Hyde; if I wasnât so used to it, I would have been suspicious and started looking in the basement for his laboratory.
