Stephen King, because he makes you care about his characters. The peril they find themselves in becomes so much more intense when you care. Incidentally, I no longer read SK for the same reason.

Stephen King. His dark stories and scary things distracted me from my own, as long as I hid in his words.

I don't know the genre that well, if I'm honest. But I did read The Magpies by Mark Edwards a little over a year ago - and it's messed with my mind every since. That's really the only one that sticks out for me.
