Excerpt
The drizzling rain has turned into a downpour, pounding loudly on the wooden roof as water seeps through the cracks and drips sporadically on various parts of our bodies. She shivers and rolls on her side with her back to me to snuggle closer. I hesitate for a minute before I roll over to cuddle her from behind with one arm, using my other arm for a pillow.
“You’re making it difficult for me to follow Preston’s orders,” I whisper in her ear above the sound of the rain.
She curls her fingers around mine, turning her head at the sound of my voice. “I’ll take care of your hand and you occupy your lips by singing me to sleep,” she says over the rain.
Minutes ago, I could make out the shapes of the trees through the small frame of the doorway—just barely—but all traces of the small sliver of moon must have vanished behind a thick curtain of clouds. Now visibility in the room is impossible. The falling rain makes the darkness seem even more ominous. I wish we were in the cave. I feel Ava sigh, and I wonder if the storm is making her restless too. I sing to her until I feel her start to relax, and then I close my eyes. It will be a miracle if I get any sleep tonight.
The steady beat of rain on the roof tells me the heart of the storm is looming above us. A loud clap of thunder makes Ava jump, and my eyes fling open. She hasn’t been asleep long. She squeezes my hand, so I squeeze back and plant a soft kiss on her neck to let her know I’m awake. She takes a deep breath and then I imagine her lids slowly sliding closed before the next boom jolts her awake for the second time, and my eyelids fly open again. I stare into the darkness after a flash of light fills up the night, counting the seconds before the roar of thunder shakes the stillness from the room. She shivers, and my arm tightens around her in response.
Something is off. I can’t place my finger on it, but now my gut fills with unease. My eyes shut and I focus on drowning out the rain to listen for anything unusual, and then it hits me. It’s not what I hear that bothers me—it’s what I feel. A vibration, steady and rhythmic… one I have felt before… when Aidon came to get my father on a stormy night just like tonight. I bolt upright and stare into the pitch-black room.
Someone is climbing the ladder.
Ava sits up next to me but before she can ask me what’s wrong, I cover her mouth with my hand and whisper in her ear. “I heard something. Don’t move. I’ll be right back.”
