Goldenhair began, “There has been a resistance army against the kingdom’s current ruler. Queen Cinderella—she prefers to be called Queen Cendrillon, but most here just call her Queen Cinder.”
Elizabeth interrupted, “Goldenhair, I’m not sure General White would approve. She is very strict about revealing too much...”
“General White is not here. And these two would not work for the queen. It is not in their spirits; something the general and her rules are not capable of understanding,” Goldenhair reminded Elizabeth. “Besides, this young girl has the shards,” Goldenhair continued to explain.
“Please.” Patience looked at Mavor and then Elizabeth. “Please explain what is so important about these glass slippers. I don’t know if going with you is what I need or want to do. I just wanted to put them someplace without having to throw them away.”
Patience looked at Goldenhair and held up the pack. “I think you should take them. And Hamelin and I will head back home.”
Goldenhair spoke directly to Patience this time.
“Once Queen Cinder took power, everything changed for the worse. Soon, a story began that was told throughout the land. The glass slippers had survived. they were a symbol of hope. If those slippers, born of happier times could survive, then there could be again a better time. Should the slippers be found and returned, then so might the hope they would bring with them.” She thought for a second, and then added, “As the years of Cinder’s reign have taken their toll on the land, that rumor has become legend. And legends, too, inspire hope. They say that her own glass slippers are the only things that can stop Cinderella’s reign.”
Hamelin looked at Patience. “She’s a legend?” he asked.
Elizabeth added, “The story of the shards is whispered throughout the kingdom.”
Goldenhair smiled. “There were many stories of someone who was able to sneak the glass slippers out of the castle.” She looked at Patience with a warm measure of fondness and respect. “As it turns out, it was a young servant named Patience Moufet who rescued them.”
Patience dropped her eyes from Mavor’s gaze. The circumstances were much more brutal than that, Patience thought to herself. The memory of that night once again sent a chill through her.
Elizabeth looked at Patience, then at Mavor. “She has the shards?” she asked with excited realization.
