“Kappas,” he said, and their beady eyes flashed before him. “You said those things were kappas and they attacked us. You almost drowned!”
“I can’t drown, Peter,” Melia said softly.
Peter leaned back. “Yes, you can. Everyone can. You know about them, what they are, what they do…how.”
“I know about a lot of things…things that you’ve never seen. Things that you would only consider to exist in myths or fairytales.”
“Like the kappas?”
“Yes, just like the kappas.”
“Why? Are you sure you’re not from a family of demon hunters? I’ve seen enough shows on TV about it to think it’s cool,” he said with a half smile. His heart raced as he stared down Melia, the woman he loved.
“No, I’m not from a family of demon hunters. I…I’m the thing that they…”
“What, Melia?”
“I’m not human.”
Peter ran his eyes over her. Had she hit her head? “Yes, you are.”
Tears filled Melia’s eyes. “No, I’m not. And I should have told you a long time ago, but I didn’t think I’d have to. I’m so sorry Peter.” The tears streamed down her face.
Peter inhaled, feeling like he was getting sucked backwards. He wanted to comfort Melia, to pull her close and tell her everything was okay. But was it? After what happened last night, how could he lie?
“I didn’t mean to fall in love with you.” Melia’s voice was just a whisper. “But I did, and I fell in deep, as deep as the ocean. I love you, Peter. So much.”
