When I saw this book was available, I jumped at the chance to read book three and offer up my review on it. I've read the first two in the Olive Kennedy, Fairy Land, MD series, and I've loved both Dreamthief and Spellweaver. Once again Tamara Grantham takes us back to the world of Faythander, this time to help the fairies. Taking place months after the events of Spellweaver, this one finds Olive working at the Texas Renaissance Festival in an attempt to earn more money, and things seem to be quiet. Things soon change when she finds herself the center of attention after a series of murders, and the prime suspect. She offers to help with the investigation, and soon realizes that much more is going on, and it requires a trip back to Faythander. One of my favorite fictional felines returns as well – meaning Han Solo.
While that sums up a lot of the plot for the more action-oriented segment of the story arc, there is still the romantic side, as Olive tries to work through her feelings and where her relationship with Kull actually stands. I think it it really this element of the story that I was drawn to, as I felt a lot of frustration. There were times I wanted Kull to wake up and see what he had, and Olive to see what she could have again if she really wanted it. I could see glimpses of what they had previously, and there were times when I found myself thinking “Wake up you two. You're great for each other.” There were definitely a lot of ups and downs in this part of the story. That's the mark of a good writer and compelling characters when I'm very much invested emotionally with both characters.
Also, I'm pretty excited, as there's hints of the continuing story, and further development of one of the sub-plots which has yet to be fully explored. If the hints in Bloodthorn are any hint, I definitely want to read book four to see where this series is headed.
