About the Book
I actually feel about 15 percent peaceful, which is a huge improvement over my normal 5 percent.
From the very beginning it is understood that Gabe is trying to transition, despite issues he faces both at home and among his peers. Although it isn't pleasant to witness the negatives a trans person has to go through, I found it incredibly important for the audience to see. But I also very much appreciated how much support gave was given that helped counter all of the hate negativity. There's a whole lot of feels in this book. You've got your basic teenage family relationship type stuff, but then there's whole other levels
There's the transitioning stuff, but that really seems more of a background to how Gabe wants to be a big-shot DJ. He does a weekly late night show, beautiful music for ugly children, while he tries to connect with and build up his popularity with his followers. As he's doing this he is trying to get a spot at a larger and more well-known radio station.
Music plays the largest role in this story. Not only with the radio stations, but there are a couple other music related important things. One of which is Gabe's next door neighbor, who happens to have gotten him the spot at the local radio station. He also is pretty much one of the best music sources available. There's a whole lot of drama that revolves around that character in specific, and he is probably my favorite from the book.
Another conflict that gave deals with is his developed feelings for his best friend. She's incredibly supportive, but also struggles with his transition especially more towards the end of the book. There is obviously a lot of confusion she is dealing with. And I find it very important to show that people can be supportive even if they don't fully understand something.
Even though I really enjoyed this book, I felt too much of the important stuff is glossed over or rushed while the other things got more focused than they needed. It just didn't feel complete to me. I wish there was more added at the end or the middle parts were expanded upon better.
