Truth or Dare by Sloan Johnson

*I was gifted a copy in return for an honest review

THIS is the 1st NOVELLA in a series of 5. Truth or Dare walks the reader though just a few weeks in a long relationship of Lea Baker (aka CB) and Coby Davis (aka Cowboy).  I really enjoy this simple easy read and found myself wanting more.  Sloan is a great writer, who expresses emotion even in a too short story.  Well written and lots of feelings about finding love, being friends and supporting each other. What more can you ask?

MEL's REVIEW:

Unexpected Consequences by Sloan Johnson

*I was gifted a copy in exchange for a honest review.

Unexpected Consequences is book number 3 in the Isthmus Alliance Series.  I have not read the first two but Ms. Johnson did a great job in introducing me to her group of characters and sharing some of their history.   I loved this book.  I was surprised how much I enjoyed the storyline. Even though it was a m/f/m relationship, each individual person, Zeke, Jeff and Mary, are such strong stand alone characters that reading about all three in a triad relationship is heart stopping.

The writing is excellent. The characters are people you come across in everyday life and have strong relationships with each other.  I loved Zeke. His relationship with his family was amazing and brave. The dialect flowed and did not sound made up.  I want to know more about these people.  I have to go back and see how it all started since I know how it all ends. This is a great read.

I did see a couple of things that needed a little work. At times a “he” was where a “she” should be and I would have to reread what I had read. Also there are a few places in the book that repeat the same history of the characters that was already stated in a previous chapter.  SO, because of that……

MEL's REVIEW:

When You’re Ready by J. L.  Berg

*I was gifted a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review

This is a love story; simple, easy and beautiful. I loved this story and its’ beautiful deep characters and writing left me with just a good feeling inside. There was no real crazy outrageous happenings, no hard core blush scenes, just a real, well-developed relationship between a beautiful man and a true to herself, widowed mom. Did I say I loved this story?

Clare is widowed mom with a great family and without looking finds love with Logan, a beautiful rich doctor. A basic story line, right? No!!  There is so much more to this story. Ms. Berg shows a relationship built  though flirting, dating, and real emotions. We all carry baggage and Clare and Logan have their past but the journey that they face together to get through it and strive for a future was romantic. I enjoyed the banter between the two and we cannot forget about Maddy. This little one is adorable and a very big part of the story. I hate when a main character has a child and somehow they are kind of just left behind in the story but Maddy stays with you and is so sweet.

When You’re Ready is a beautiful, romantic, journey of love lost, healing, redemption and a second chance for love.

MEL's REVIEW:

Alluring Ties by Skye Turner

*Book 2.5 Bayou Stix  A Bayou Novella

*I received a ARC copy of Alluring Ties in exchange for an honest review*

I was asked to review this book not realizing that it was a novella after the story is concluded until I opened the cover. I was prepared to be lost and not know what was happening at all but I was wrong. Lesson of the day, NEVER ASSUME.

Alluring Ties is more of a companion novella that is used to delve into the 7 years before and up to the current happening of both previous books. The main characters of Alluring Ties are the best friends of Lexi (main lead in Alluring Turmoil), Bradi and Erik.  I need to tell you that I am not big on novellas but this one is GOOD and I loved all the characters so much, that I am buying the other two books, Alluring Turmoil and Alluring Seduction; even though I already know that everything turns out happy ever after.

I adore all these characters, even the very insignificant ones. Everyone has a purpose and Skye brings each and everyone to life.  The writing is excellent. My emotions were everywhere and I connected with Brandi and Erik. I want them as my besties.Skye conveys to us a couple of different love stories but through the eyes of friendship amongst the three. I cannot say enough about this little doozy. Alluring Ties goes back and forth between Brandi and Erik POV. There is cheating and M/M sex scenes and not everyone is going to be comfortable with it, so be warned. I would suggest reading Alluring Turmoil and Alluring Seduction first but if those two are anything like Alluring Ties, we are all in for a treat.

ALLURING TIES receives 4 out of 5 Platypires.

MEL'S REVIEW:

Consequences of Deception by Ella Fox

*I received an ARC of Consequences of Deception in exchange for an honest review

I am totally an Ella Fox fan and absolutely love everything that is the Hart Family/Renegade Series, so signing up for Consequences of Deception was a no brainer for me. If I had not received and ARC I would have bought the book and was super excited to read Consequences of Deception. I enjoyed the story with all the twist and turns and never knowing which way is up and of course the “adult” scenes are hot, hot, and hot. . I also loved everything that is 80s in this book and thought it was fun to revisit all my favorite movies. This is an easy one sitting read with a HEA ending and a great epilogue.

Sloan and Killian’s love affair is filled with lies and deceit but somehow the love shines through all the death and deception. Sloan is in love with Killian from the very beginning and honestly, I did not like Killian until more than half way through the book. Sloan was in her head quite a bit and I imagine some of the things that happen to her lead her to maybe seeming weak but I believe it was how she coped and maintained, not a sign of weakness. In fact, my favorite scenes where when Sloan was calling Killian an “a**hole”. I think Sloan had a natural and true to life response to what was happening to her. I wanted to hate Killian but then that true side of him shows up and I am sold on his true feelings for Sloan.

Consequences of Deception is story that illustrates how one lie can affect so many and tries to change the course of life but how FATE and DESTINY always prevail.

CONSEQUENCES of DECEPTION receive 4 out of 5 Platypires.

SYNOPSIS:

Picture
Kane Archer hasn’t always been tormented; he hasn’t always hated himself or been full of rage. He hasn’t always lived his life with an overpowering sense of guilt that threatens to destroy him.

There was a time when his life was different. He was optimistic; he smiled and laughed; he loved passionately; he had it all.

Kane was content—until the unthinkable took it all away.

Two and a half years later and still reeling from his fiancée’s death, Kane returns to the one place he vowed he’d never visit again—Camden—with the promise to find the men who killed her and bring them to justice, regardless of the cost.

Emotionally numb, stricken by guilt, and haunted by the events preceding Aimee’s death, the last thing Kane wanted was to meet someone he connected with; someone who made him feel again.

As Kane gets closer to those responsible for Aimee’s death, he is thrown a curveball when he discovers a secret so devastating it rocks his world and threatens to destroy his chance at happiness.

Whitney Jareau packed up her life when tragedy struck her family, leaving everything behind. Finally free from the persistent and domineering family that insisted she do the one thing she couldn’t, Whitney found peace in Camden.

Two years later, her family wants her to come home and will stop at nothing to get her there. Wearing her heart on her sleeve for Kane Archer, a man so gorgeous it hurts to see the pain he carries, Whitney fights her family and refuses to return home to carry out their wishes.

Can Whitney stay strong without giving in to the demands of her family?

Can Kane let go of the past and move forward with the woman who brought him back to life?

Or, will he walk away from her and carry the burden of UNBEARABLE GUILT

MEL's REVIEW

Unbearable Guilt by Emma Grayson

*I was given a copy of this book in exchange for a honest review

Unbearable Guilt by Emma Grayson is an enjoyable read. It is a standalone book with recurring characters and a very happy ending.  I enjoy little reads like this.  This was my first exposure to  Emma Grayson’s writing skills and at the end of the book, Emma lets us in on how this was her first attempt to write from the male’s POV. She did well. Unbearable Guilt is the second book in the series but even though I have not read the first book, I was surprised that I did not feel lost nor do I feel like I know the whole story of Unbeautifully Loved.

Zane Archer is an alpha male all the way but completely caught up in so much guilt that he cannot feel anymore, that is until he meets Whitney. I have to say, I loved Whitney’s character and felt that I could relate to her. She was a hard working girl that could take care of herself and knows what she wants without being pushy. Zane was just a big old tough guy on the outside and a mess on the inside. Zane’s flashbacks were filled with emotion and that is where I connected with him. Have to love Zane because who does not want to fix a broken hunk?

The plot of the story had lots of twist and turns and at times was predictable but still fun. It was just not boy meets girl, hot sex, then happy ever after. Emma adds some story in the mix that is refreshing. She also writes about Zane and Whitney’s friendships with others. I loved a character names Basil. She reminds me of Penelope from CRIMINAL MINDS.

The story flowed easily. The only thing that I saw wrong would be sometimes information that was already given was repeated and a little choppy. I liked the story and would recommend it for just a quick read. I would give it a higher rating with a few tweaks in the editing but all in all, I enjoyed it.

UNBEARABLE GUILT receives a solid 3 out of 5 platypires.
